Moveable feast date: The feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, is designated as a solemnity. This marks it as a feast of great importance within the Catholic Church. The feast is held on the final Sunday of the Church’s liturgical year; the last Sunday before Advent. The feast was established in 1925 by Pope Pius XI, in response to growing nationalism, materialism, and tyranny around the world. It was, and is still, a reminder that Christ’s authority surpasses all earthly powers, and that God’s kingdom of justice, peace, and love, is one which we are called to build together with all people, everywhere. It is by following God’s law of love and mercy – communicated through Christ the King and often at odds with worldly powers and rulers – which builds God’s kingdom on earth.
