The Visitation

Feast day, 31 May: The feast of The Visitation
celebrates the visit of Mary to her elder cousin, Elizabeth. Both women were pregnant through God’s grace; Mary being a young virgin and Elizabeth a woman past child-bearing age. At their meeting, Mary recites a prayer of thanks. This prayer is called the Magnificat. Mary’s prayer speaks of a Messiah who will bring down mighty kings from their thrones, and lift up the lowly. So important is the Magnificat, that for centuries it has been prayed daily as part of the Church’s
official Evening Prayer. So radical is its sentiment that, over the years, the Magnificat has been banned by various authoritarian regimes. The Gospel contained within The Visitation Celebration of the Word (Luke 1:39-56), will be studied by several year groups in the RED Branch, Prophecy and Promise.
