Together in Peru

Every year we produce an assembly focusing on one of the many overseas projects supported by Mission Together. Together in Peru introduces pupils to girls from the Amazon Rainforest and the Sisters who are ensuring that these girls have the opportunity to flourish in faith. This assembly aims to deepen pupil’s understanding of Catholic Social Teaching and everyone’s valued place within God’s global family.

This year’s campaign assembly focuses on a girls boarding school located in Iquitos – a city in the heart of the Peruvian rainforest. Education in the rainforest is a big challenge. Only eight per cent of children understand what they read. And for girls, the situation is even worse. In response, the Sisters of the Incarnate Word opened a free boarding school. There fifty-five girls from the rainforest receive quality education, healthy meals, and somewhere safe to live and be cared for.

The girls are pioneers as they’re first in their families to receive an education. They are opening doors for future generations. But for the Sisters, education is not the ultimate goal. They want to give these girls something even greater: faith, so that they may come to know Jesus and grow into better people. And they are succeeding.

“We live thanks to the generosity of kind-hearted people. The girls’ families often cannot even afford the journey to the school.”
