In June, pupils gathered from Catholic primary schools across the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton for a very special Good Shepherd liturgical prayer.
This annual event usually takes place at Worth Abbey, but this year we celebrated at Arundel as the Cathedral marks its 150th anniversary. Arundel and Brighton’s Good Shepherd gathering celebrates acts of faith, love and charity witnessed by children over the academic year. During the service, the schools present a cheque to Mission Together, of their collective fundraising efforts across the year.
An incredible gift
On hand to receive this cheque was Mission Together’s brilliant diocesan representative, Mrs Fran Thomas. Fran has been delivering Mission Together assemblies in schools within the diocese for several years and so was delighted to accept a cheque for £4,727.33. An additional cheque from St Wilfrid’s Primary, Burgess Hill, took the final total closer to £5000!
‘This is an amazing amount raised by pupils within the diocese in what has been another difficult year for many of our school families. We are so grateful for the prayers and generosity shown by the pupils and their families.’
A beautiful liturgy
The liturgy began with a wonderful gathering song performed in Makaton by the students of St John’s School and College. Pupils from across the diocese also contributed through music, dance, reading and the presentation to Bishop Richard Moth of their own hand-made sheep! This fantastic flock of unique artworks were a symbol of the children’s promise to follow Christ, the loving Shepherd.
Two big anniversaries
As the celebration drew to a close, Bishop Richard was also made aware that though the cathedral marks its 150th year, Mission Together is older still as 2023 marks its 180th anniversary! Over that time, with the help of young supporters like those in Arundel and Brighton, Mission Together has enabled thousands of children living in poverty around the world to access education, shelter, healthcare and to grow in the knowledge of God’s love.
Over recent years Mission Together has also supported the mission of Catholic education in England and Wales through provision of free catechetical and classroom resources, which you can download from our websites.
A huge thank you to everyone who made our Good Shepherd celebration such a wonderful occasion, and to all our young supporters from the diocese and across England and Wales for your tireless support, prayers, and fundraising. With your help, we are bringing hope and help to poor children across the world!
