Peru
Peru is a country in the continent of South America. Almost half of the country is covered by the Amazon, the world’s largest rain forest. This huge jungle is home to plants and animals that do not live anywhere else on Earth!
Peru is one of the world’s poorest countries. In the town of Yurimaguas, on the edge of the Amazon, the people’s main food is the fruit that grows there. Unable to buy meat, vegetables or dairy, the children often go hungry and become sick. Thanks to Mission Together children in Australia, the church in Yurimaguas set up a feeding programme and clinic to support the families there.
The church also set up a Mission Together group for the local children. Read what ten-year-old Giuseppe has to say about the group, “We meet every Sunday morning, and I like the things we do and everything they teach us. I also like our greeting, which is: “Con Dios, los niños del mundo serán siempre amigos” (With God, the children of the world will always be friends).
In Peru’s capital city, Lima, Mission Together groups meet every year on the feast of the Epiphany for a joint Mass and celebration. The film below shows the children sharing Star of Bethlehem stickers to passers-by before their Mission Together celebration.
